COLUMBUS, Ohio — A firefighter died Tuesday in an off-duty motorcycle crash.
WCMH-TV reported that Columbus Division of Fire firefighter Derek Walton lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to fall on its side and crash into a light pole, according to the Columbus Division of Police.
Walton was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
The crash is currently under investigation.
According to a Facebook post, Walton had been a member of the department since 2014.
“One of the things that stands out to me about Derek is that he was so excited about becoming a paramedic, he started his training on his own time at Grant Hospital instead of waiting for the next Columbus Fire class,” Assistant Chief James Cannell said. “He will be greatly missed.”
He was also a member of the U.S. Army from 2004 until 2007, when he received an honorable discharge.
