DETROIT — A person of interest in the December homicide of a veteran Detroit firefighter has been arrested on unrelated warrants, police said Monday.

David Madrigal’s body was found at his home in the 7600 block of Vaughn on Detroit’s west side Dec. 21 by a relative. Madrigal died of blunt force trauma to the head, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. His death was ruled a homicide.

Detroit Police Office Dan Donakowski confirmed the arrest Monday, but said he could not release any further details.

“It’s a male that was arrested on unrelated warrants who may have some information in regards to this case,” Donakowski said.

Madrigal, 59, had been a Detroit firefighter for 26 years and worked out of Engine 33, Ladder 13. Madrigal was just months away from retirement at the time of his death.

Madrigal, who had two adult children and was a grandfather, often volunteered to help the homeless, according to Mike Nevin, president of the Detroit Fire Fighters Association.

He was well-known for his charitable acts, Nevin said, and he also collected toys for needy children and was part of the Fire Department’s honor guard, a special role in which he helped pay tribute to fallen comrades at their funerals.

Police said earlier that personal items were stolen from Madrigal’s home but investigators have declined to say what they were.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department’s homicide division at 313-596-2260.
