SOMERVILLE, N.J. — Crime Stoppers of Somerset is seeking the public’s help — with the offer of a reward of up to $2,500 — for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the hit-and-run death of retired Somerville firefighter George Kavanaugh on Friday night in front of Somerville Fire Department Lincoln Hose Company #4 firehouse.
At approximately 9: 25 p.m., Kavanaugh, 75, of Somerville, was standing on the sidewalk directly in front of the firehouse, located at 34 Warren Street, awaiting a ride from his friend, when he was struck and run over by a light-colored vehicle that had backed out of the fire department parking lot, Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey D. Soriano said.
The vehicle had been “idling” and parked in the area of the front bay firehouse door between 9:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Soriano said.
