Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore and FDNY members unveiled a new memorial wall at the EMS Academy Wednesday, honoring fallen EMS members lost in the line of duty, to WTC-related illnesses, or while serving with the Bureau of Training — a tribute inspired by Probationary Firefighter Haley Sato, who raised over $13,000 in memory of her mentor, EMT Idris Bey.

NEW YORK — The FDNY dedicated a new memorial wall on Wednesday honoring fallen EMS members.

Located at the FDNY EMS Training Academy in Fort Totten, Queens, the wall honors 20 EMS members who died in the line of duty, from World Trade Center -related illnesses or while serving as active members of the EMS Bureau of Training.

“This wall is an important reminder of the fallen EMS members who served New York City,” said FDNY Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore. “Their work was and always will be essential, and their contributions deserve recognition.”

Dedicated to EMT Idris Bey, an instructor who trained thousands of medics at the academy and who died of COVID-19, the memorial was funded by former academy drill instructor-turned-probationary firefighter Haley Sato, who raised more than $13,000 selling commemorative coins honoring Bey.

The wall memorializing EMS members is in addition to the FDNY Memorial Wall near Ground Zero at Engine Company 10 in lower Manhattan. That 56-foot-long bronze monument was originally dedicated to the 343 members of the Fire Department who perished on 9/11.

Since then, the names of 438 Fire and EMS personnel who later succumbed to illnesses from exposure to the toxic dust around Ground Zero have been added.
