SAN DIEGO — San Diego Fire-Rescue is working to spark young women’s interest in joining fire and emergency services.
The department’s Girls Empowerment Camp hosted around 100 girls between the ages of 14 and 18, where they learn the basics of firefighting and what the job entails.
“Them getting their hands on the equipment is going to show them this is something they can do if they put their heart and soul into it,” firefighter Amber Taddeo told NBC San Diego.
The two-day free event, led by female firefighters, taught girls how to use a fire hose, climb a ladder and how to perform CPR.
“They make it really easy for you, so, it shows me not to be afraid of everything,” 15-year-old Amapola Fonseca said. “Like, take a chance.”
