MERIDEN, Conn. — Three firefighters are being treated for burns and five residents were displaced after a fire ripped through the first floor of an East Main Street home early Tuesday morning.
About 1:30 a.m., a fire broke out on the first floor of 504 E. Main St., Fire Marshal Steven Trella said. Residents were woken by smoke detectors and attempted to fight the blaze themselves before calling 911. The property owner attempted to use buckets of water and an outdoor hose to douse the flames, he said.
“The house sustained heavy damage,” Trella said. “It gutted the first floor of the building.” Three firefighters were burned while fighting the blaze, Fire Chief Ken Morgan said. One firefighter has been treated and released from the Bridgeport Hospital burn unit. Another firefighter is receiving treatment for a burn on his ear, while a third injured his elbow, Morgan said.
