WEST SAYVILLE, N.Y. A brush fire near West Oak Recreation Club in West Sayville that firefighters subdued Sunday night reignited Monday morning, West Sayville Fire Department chief Lucus Domingo said.

The fire consumed several acres by 10 p.m. Sunday night. Firefighters returned to the scene Monday morning. “Crews are there hitting a few small hotspots that are burning,” Domingo wrote in an email Monday morning.

Four firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene Sunday night and one was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for observation.

Several houses were threatened but unharmed as firefighters from 10 departments battled wind and dry conditions.

Higher than normal tides kept fire boats from passing under a small bridge to access the area, Domingo wrote.

The fire’s cause was still under investigation Monday, he said.

In addition to the fire departments, Domingo added, Community Ambulance Company of Sayville, Suffolk police and Islip Town Department of Public Works responded to the fire Sunday.
