NEW YORK — Nine firefighters were injured in a suspicious blaze that broke out in what was supposed to be a vacant building.
ABC 7 reported that FDNY firefighters responded to the fire Monday morning, which broke out inside of a home after two squatters, who were not supposed to be there, were inside, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Brendan McSweeney.
“It’s supposed to be a vacant building,” he said.
Chief McSweeney added that nine firefighters suffered minor injuries while putting out the blaze that was likely caused by debris inside the home. He said the squatters were also injured, but got out of the house before firefighters arrived.
“It is suspicious and they are investigating,” Chief McSweeney said.
Neighbors said the building is considered a “trap house.”
“The kids call it a trap house, meaning there’s a lot of vagrant people that go there, like people that are on drugs or just need a place to stay and they hang out over there,” neighbor Sherrell Jordan said.
