RED WING, Minn. — A barking dog awakened a Red Wing family early Saturday morning, alerting occupants to a house fire and allowing them to evacuate safely, according to the Red Wing fire department.
Firefighters and paramedics were at the house fire at 1922 Burton St., Red Wing, within five minutes of receiving an emergency call 1:56 a.m. Rescuers found the garage fully engulfed in flames, with the fire extending to the house and attic space.
Firefighters mounted an aggressive interior attack stopping the fire and extinguished it within two hours of their arrival.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials did not mention or don’t know what caused the fire.
Officials say the garage and attic sustained heavy fire damage. The first and second floor sustained moderate smoke, fire and water damage.
Thirty-five firefighters battled the fire and worked at the scene for two-and-half hours. Rescuers fought the fire with five engines, one ladder truck and three ambulances.
Everybody inside the house escaped safely after being awakened by the family dog whose barking alerted the family to the blaze. There was no injuries to emergency responders. A cat was also rescued. It was administered oxygen and returned to the family.
The emergency also drew fire and paramedics from cities and areas surrounding Red Wing. The Goodhue Fire Department, Ellsworth Fire Department, and Ellsworth Ambulance Service assisted at the scene. Cannon Falls Ambulance Service also offered aid to Station 1 to provide EMS coverage. Red Wing police were also on the scene.
