SELMA TWP., Mich. — After putting out the flames at a Michigan firefighter’s home Sunday, the Selma Township (Mich.) Fire Department has shifted its focus to helping the firefighter and his family with recovery by collecting donations.
9&10News.com reported that firefighters reached out to the community for help with simple things like personal hygiene items, clothing and toys for the firefighter’s two young sons.
“It’s bad for anybody but I believe it’s a little bit more heartfelt when it’s one of your comrade’s house going up. It’s kind of an empty feeling in your stomach when something like that goes on,” said Scott McConnell, one of the firefighters who responded to the fire.
Several firefighters spoke about the strong bonds and loyalty within the fire community.
“It’s just a bigger family and everybody’s there for you through everything, thick and thin, happy times and sad times,” said Brandon Bennett.
“The best feeling I had of all was when I turned around and saw all the other fire trucks and other fire departments that were in line out into the road that answered the call that we needed help,” McConnell said.
“Once you’re in the fire service you’re always part of it,” said Jason Baughan.
