CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials say more than 75 firefighters worked to contain a large fire at a recycling plant in west Charlotte.
Multiple media outlets report officials say the fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at Caraustar Recovered Fiber, which is a paperboard recycling plant.
Intense flames burned large piles of cardboard and appeared to melt pieces of a tractor-trailer shipping container on the property. Smoke from the fire could be seen by workers uptown.
Charlotte Fire Department spokeswoman Cynthia Shah-Khan says the five-alarm fire is the largest the department has responded to this year.
Shah-Khan says four firefighters were checked out by paramedics for heat-related problems and one firefighter was transported to Carolinas Medical Center for treatment.
Investigators have not said what they believe caused the fire.
