DEER TRAIL, Colo. — “By the time we arrived flames were 30 feet out of the roof of the building,” Deer Trail Rural Fire Protection District Fire Chief Richard Loveless said about a fire that broke out in a vacant hardware store near Elm Street and 1st Avenue around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.
It took about three hours for firefighters to extinguish the fire, but Loveless said crews would be on scene all day monitoring hot spots.
He said there were still lots of chemicals and debris from the hardware store inside the building. Eugene Dreher, who lives next door to the store, called 911 when he smelled smoke.
