WATERTOWN, N.Y. — After one of their own was the victim of a fire, fellow firefighters stepped in to help.
Firefighter Kyle Sample, with the Town of Watertown Fire Department, and his family escaped a fire in their house Saturday; his wife, two children and mother-in-law suffered burns and smoke inhalation.
Sample, his wife and one of his children were still recovering in the hospital as of Monday, reported WWNY-TV.
Sample’s colleagues went to his home and boarded up windows to ensure the building was protected. Sample, a Fort Drum soldier, was recently assigned a deployment and was planning to move.
“He had just 20 days ago resigned because it was going to be a couple-year deployment and they were going to leave, but even if they resign from our department, we still consider them family,” Watertown Fire Chief Charlie Dillon said. “This is a horrible thing to have happen to anyone’s family.”
A GoFundMe page has raised over $9,000 for Sample and his family.
