Several Chicago firefighters were among seven people overcome by toxic fumes generated by a fire in the basement of a thrift store in Roscoe Village on the North Side on Sunday night.
The seven were taken to four area hospitals. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The fire was reported at 9:38 p.m. at the Village Thrift Store, 2043 W. Roscoe, and had been put out by 11 p.m., a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said. The cause was under investigation.
Police said a Level 1 hazardous materials alert had been declared at the site.
SQUAD REMAINS ON SCENE
A Fire Department hazardous materials squad remained at the scene at midnight, officials said.
Three of the injured went to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
Two victims were taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, one was treated at Weiss Memorial Hospital, and one person was at St. Joseph Hospital.
