BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Burlington Fire Department responded to two fires within a few hours of each other Saturday evening, but neither looked to have caused significant damage.
The first fire, which was at 1030 Brooks St., was called in at 3:43 p.m., and a couple of Burlington fire trucks happened to be in the area at the time. Though flames were visible on the outside of the house by the time the fire was called in, the quick response limited fire damage to the exterior of the southwest corner of the home. The interior of the house suffered little, if any, smoke damage, it but did suffer some water damage. The fire was extinguished just minutes after firefighters arrived, though they had to dig into the roof to snuff out the blaze completely.
The family living in the house, owned by Hannah Washington, was able to escape without injury. A cause for the fire has not been released yet, and a spokesperson with the Burlington Police Department said the fire is under investigation.
Shortly after firefighters returned from that fire, another was called in at 6:14 p.m. at 620 Spring St. No one was injured in the blaze, and no outside damage was visible. The fire was contained to the interior of the house, and firefighters had the blaze extinguished within six minutes.
That fire was caused by a sander in the kitchen, which then ignited the dust particles surrounding it. The house, owned by Jessica Johnson, suffered some smoke and fire damage to the kitchen. The West Burlington Fire Department was called in on mutual aid for both scenes.
The Mediapolis Fire Department also responded to a couple of large field and brush fires Saturday, but did not require the assistance from the Burlington Fire Department.
