CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. — A firefighter died Wednesday of an apparent heart attack following an extended operation at a fire.
The U.S. Fire Administration reported that Cliffside Park Fire Department firefighter Cosmo Paris, 59, a 15-year veteran, was returning home after an incident when he suffered an apparent heart attack.
“Firefighter Paris responded to an activated alarm which created a hazard in the building necessitating fire officials to order a stand-by at the location for a fire watch,” the USFA report stated. “The fire watch duty extended 16 hours in sub-freezing temperatures.”
A short time after the fire watch concluded, firefighter Paris suffered a heart attack while operating a motor vehicle, according to the report. A police officer discovered him and he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injury.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
