COLUMBUS — An early morning fire claimed the life of a Columbus fixture Thursday.

Homer Bristow was killed when a fire broke out in his home at 51 Northeast Teal Lane, north of Columbus.

Bristow wrote columns for area newspapers for years.

Columbus Fire Chief Jason Allison said the fire broke out at about 5:10 a.m. Thursday and the CFD sent four trucks and 12 firefighters. Allison said the West Mineral and Weir fire departments also responded.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s office and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.
