NH boy, 9, saves brother from fire

The boy became an honorary member of the fire department Tuesday

NEW IPSWICH, N.H. — A 9-year-old boy who saved his younger brother from their burning home last month was recognized Tuesday for his actions.

“I just remember hearing the fire alarm, looking, seeing out the window, fire, and getting my brother out,” Isaiah Blais told WMUR.

Fire Chief Meredith Lund applauded the boy for acting so quickly.

“The fact that he had the wherewithal to do that still amazes me, because I have a grandson that’s right about that age, and I’m thinking that he might think twice,” Lund said. “And it seems like Isaiah didn’t give it any thought. He just grabbed his brother and out he went and met his parents.”

A ceremony was held at the fire station in Isaiah’s honor, where he was given a certificate recognizing him as a hometown hero. He also became an honorary member of the fire department.

“I’m very proud,” Isaiah’s mother, Jessica Blais said. “I’m very proud of Isaiah and both of them have just handled this very well, and they’re very brave boys.”
