Off-duty firefighter helps save neighbor’s home on fire

He used a garden hose to put out the fire believed to have been sparked by lightning

CARY, N.C. — A Cary family says they have their neighbor to thank for saving their home after they say he used a garden hose to put out a fire believed to have been sparked by lightning during Monday’s severe weather.

Firefighters were called to a home on Swansboro Drive in Cary around 8:11 p.m. after lightning was believed to have struck the house. Investigators are working to determine if lightning caused the house fire. Cary police say there was significant damage to the home and the family has been displaced as a result.

The homeowner, David Raper, said he and his family were out to dinner when lightning struck their home during Monday’s severe weather.
