HOLMES COUNTY, Fla. — Smoke was still visible from the house on North Highway 181 in Holmes County hours after a fire tore the walls and roof to the ground.

The heat was so strong it even destroyed the truck parked just outside — melting the interior right down to the frame. “When we arrived it was completely gone,” said Battalion Chief Doug Remmel of the Ponce de Leon Volunteer Fire Department. “There was nothing we could have done.”

The specially issued “Support Firefighters” license plate on the half burned truck told the painful tale Monday. This was no ordinary call for fire. “It was one of our own guys,” said Remmel. “He was actually on the other fire with us when this one came in.”
