Woman watches home burn as firefighters struggle with hydrant

A battalion chief with the fire department says a process that should take about a minute, took closer to 45 minutes

WINDSOR, Colo. — One thing is certain: Marie Alkire’s home in Windsor is a total loss. Thursday about 10 p.m., she and a roommate were forced out of the home because of fire.

When Windsor Fire and Rescue arrived minutes later, they say they lost precious time because the main valve on the nearby fire hydrant would not open. A battalion chief with the fire department says a process that should take about a minute, took closer to 45 minutes.

The same battalion chief says a similar issue, with another fire hydrant happened less than a year ago.
