Chief Steve Prziborowski wrote an article that can found on our website, called “Your reputation starts on day one.” His words should be read by both candidates and working firefighters. Too often as new employees, we don’t really know what kind of reputation we have, and often firefighters try to change their reputation too late in the game.
This is evident around the firehouse when the word of a promotional exam starts to get out. Suddenly the uniform shirts get dusted off and boots are getting shined for the first time in years.
Those individuals who have not set the best precedence in their career try to do so suddenly when they have something to gain. As Steve says, “your reputation starts on day one.” It starts the day you hand in your application. Reputations, especially bad ones, are very sticky so make sure you start off on the right foot and stay on track throughout your career.
