Calif. fire department appoints deputy, assistant chiefs

San Bernardino County fire chief says both veterans are well-respected by their peers

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The San Bernardino County Fire Department named two senior-level officers from within the ranks.

Deputy Chief Jim Johnstone, who will oversee all aspects of firefighting operations, began his career with the San Bernardino County Fire Department in 1985 as a firefighter-paramedic. During his career, Chief Johnstone worked his way through the ranks, being promoted to battalion chief in 2008, division chief in 2011 and assistant chief in 2014.

“Jim possesses strong leadership and management qualities to lead this department into the future,” Fire Chief Mark Hartwig said. “Jim is well-respected for his operational knowledge, skills and abilities. He has been and continues to be a mentor to many.”

Chief Johnstone fills the vacancy left by Deputy Chief Dan Odom who recently retired after serving 42 years.

“I look forward to the challenge and opportunity in the pursuit of a world-class fire organization,” Chief Johnstone said. “County Fire employees are exemplary in their field of work. I am proud to be a part of this team.”

Assistant Chief Don Trapp, who will oversee human resources, the public information office, support services, and day-to-day fiscal operations and special projects, became interested in the fire service right out of high school. He first became a paid-on-call firefighter for the California Department of Foresty and began his full-time fire service career with San Bernardino County Fire in 1989.

Chief Trapp worked his way through the ranks and was promoted in March 2012 to division chief of the High Desert Division

“During these challenging economic times, we continue to find ways to persevere and provide the highest level of services to those we serve,” Chief Hartwig said. “Chief Trapp has the experience and expertise to continue this mission.”
