STAMFORD, Conn. — A city volunteer fire chief has been accused of punching his former girlfriend’s son in the face after smashing his car window Sunday morning, police said.

Springdale Fire Co. Chief Shawn Fahan, 52, of Sterling Place, has been charged with third-degree assault, breach of peace, criminal mischief and failure to drive right.

Sgt. Simon Blanc said the arrest was made after a 22-year-old man called 911 shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday, reporting Fahan had just shattered his driver’s side window and punched him in the face on Tresser Boulevard.

The man said he was driving westbound on East Main Street when he stopped at a traffic light at Elm Street and saw Fahan drive up next to him, Blanc said.

The man said Fahan and his mother had a long-term relationship that ended about two years ago. However, the man said he’s seen Fahan driving by the home he shares with his mother, Blanc said.

The man accused Fahan of stalking them when the two were stopped at the traffic light, Blanc said. Fahan replied by yelling profanities at the man and told him to pull over at the next parking lot up the street, Blanc said.

However, the man kept driving until Fahan cut him off near Grey Rock Place, Blanc said. Fahan then got out of his car and grabbed the top of the glass as the man tried to pull up his window, Blanc said. Fahan violently shook the window and shattered the glass, Blanc said. Fahan then punched the man in the face before jumping back into his car and fleeing, Blanc said.

A police officer investigating the incident called Fahan who turned himself in about noon Sunday. Fahan was released about an hour later when he posted $1,500 bond.

Fahan could not be reached for comment.

Robert “Rex” Morris, the city’s assistant chief of volunteer services, said he was aware of Fahan’s arrest, although he had not been briefed on the details.

Morris said he planned to learn more about the arrest on Monday. He said Fahan was still the chief of the Springdale department.
