BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The Allin Township fire chief was indicted Wednesday on criminal charges related to the alleged theft of more than $10,000 from the Stanford-based agency.
Joshua S. Deterding, 30, of Stanford, was charged with felony theft, official misconduct and money laundering.
Charges filed Wednesday state Deterding took public money between Jan. 25, 2013 and Jan. 15, 2015. Official misconduct allegations accuse the fire chief of violating the law by taking and using fire district funds for his personal use.
The money laundering charges state that Deterding improperly deposited money into the petty cash fund in order to use the money for his personal use.
McLean County Sheriff Jon Sandage said county investigators had been working on the case since early March. An example of what the investigation turned up, he said, was Deterding’s alleged use of a fire district debit card at ATM machines in bars, said Sandage.
Deterding was held in the McLean County jail in lieu of $1,525.
