Former fire chief pleads guilty to grand larceny

He was sentenced to five years non-adjudicated probation and was also ordered to pay restitution

JACKSON, Miss. — A former volunteer fire chief pled guilty to one count of grand larceny Wednesday.

WJTV reported that Jerry Warren, with the Southwest Covington County Volunteer Fire Department, was sentenced to five years non-adjudicated probation.

He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $9,807.35.

Warren embezzled the money from the department dating back to 2009 by making cash withdrawals totaling $9,450.38 from two separate bank accounts, while also making unauthorized personal purchases totaling $356.97.

“Volunteer fire departments provide an invaluable service to many Mississippians, so it is particularly disheartening to see a former fire chief embezzling from his own fire department,” State Auditor Stacey Pickering said. “I am glad that this money will be returned to the Southwest Covington County Volunteer Fire Department.”
