ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. — A fire chief was injured in a car crash while responding to a fire call Tuesday morning.
The Roanoke Times reported that Chief Jerry Caldwell, with Catawba Volunteer Fire Company, was driving to a call when he struck a patch of ice, causing his car to run off the road and strike a tree.
He was the only person in the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt, according to the report. Speed is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
Caldwell, who has been chief of the fire company for 40 years, was taken to a hospital for treatment of multiple serious injuries. He was listed in fair condition Tuesday afternoon.
