SOMERVILLE, N.J. — George Kavanaugh, 75, a volunteer for 50 years with the Somerville Fire Department, was killed in front of the Lincoln Hose Company Fire House, the victim of a hit-and-run Friday night, according to borough police.
Kavanaugh, a lifelong resident of the borough, was found lying in front of the firehouse at 34 Warren St. at 9:30 p.m. with injuries consistent with having been struck by a motor vehicle, said Sgt. Edward Purcell of the borough’s police department.
Kavanaugh was the former chief of the Somerville Fire Department in 1985 and 1986. He was a member of Engine Company No. 1 and a trustee of the Somerville Fire Department Relief Association.
