Fire dept.'s monitoring mental health of new hires

About 12 to 15 percent of applicants who take the mental health test are ruled out based on the results

LAKE ELMO, Minn. — Before he ever suited up as a firefighter with Lake Elmo, Lt. Larry Cornell had to first pass a mandatory mental health exam.

“It was a very long test,” Cornell said. “Somebody coming in here will answer somewhere between 1,000, 1,300 questions,” Dr. Gary Liaboe said. He is the licensed psychologist in charge of administering the 6-hour-long exam to many of the metro’s police and fire departments.

“One of the things it tells you is if someone is faking good or bad,” he said. “They’re simple questions. They’re just one line questions with yes or no answers. They’re not complicated but it gives us a real snapshot of who they are.”
