DUXBURY, Mass. — A Duxbury firefighter and former part-time police officer accused of drunken driving and leaving the scene of an accident in Plymouth will remain on active duty with the fire department pending the outcome of his case, Fire Chief Kevin Nord said.

Following his arrest Dec. 29, John Thomas, 53, was placed on paid administrative leave from the fire department. He returned to active duty Jan. 6 after the department completed its own investigation. That will remain his status pending the outcome of his case in Wareham District Court, Nord said.

Thomas, who has been a firefighter for 25 years, was arrested by Plymouth police Dec. 29. Police say he drove into the back of a vehicle stopped at Beaver Dam and State roads in the Manomet section of town, then drove away.

Thomas was in his own SUV at the time but was wearing his Duxbury police uniform - he was a part-time officer - and carrying his town-issued gun. He resigned from his police job the day after being arrested.

He is due back in court on April 28.
