AUSTRALIA — A gruelling application process, personal risk and comparatively low pay aren’t enough to deter aspiring firefighters, who have made the role one of the most sought-after jobs this year. However, it is “bean counting” that is still the most popular choice for jobseekers hungry for success and cash.

New figures from jobs site www.careerone.com.au show that searches for accountants, nannies and defence roles have increased the most in 2012 and cashier and cleaning jobs rounded out the top six. IT jobs, trades and services and accounting remain the top industry searches, while retail is again out of the top 10 despite being the country’s second-largest employer (10.5 per cent of the workforce according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics).

United Firefighters Union of Australia national president Mick Farrell said the 61 per cent increase in firefighting job searches between 2011 and 2012 was driven by mainly teachers and builders wanting a different job later in life.
