Mass. fire departments send 700 pounds of peanut butter to Haiti

Firefighters competed to gather the most peanut butter to send to Haiti, gathering almost 700 pounds

UXBRIDGE, Mass. — Central Mass. fire departments are participating in the first annual Great Fire & EMS Peanut Butter Challenge, in efforts to send hundreds of pounds of peanut butter to Haiti.

The Douglas Fire Department won the challenge, collecting 223 jars of peanut butter weighing almost 300 pounds, according to the Telegram.

The Challenge was working in conjunction with Mission of Hope International, an organization that has built schools and churches in Haiti.

In total, the competing fire departments gathered 681 pounds of peanut butter that will be shipped to earthquake-ravaged Haiti in January in 55-gallon drums.

Organizers say the peanut butter will be inspected in light of recent peanut butter recalls.
