ATTLEBORO, Mass. — The veteran Attleboro firefighter facing federal drug charges has resigned from the department, officials said.

Michael B. Wilson, free on a $10,000 secured bond, submitted a letter of resignation late Thursday afternoon to Mayor Kevin Dumas who, with other city officials, was prepared to fire the 25-year firefighter the next day, said Chief Scott Lachance.

“That definitely simplifies the process for the city,” Lachance said.

Wilson, 50, had been suspended without pay since his Feb. 1 arrest on charges of buying and selling oxycodone and steroids.

Wilson’s arrest brought to light his lengthy criminal history, which involved convictions on charges of bribing a Rhode Island public official, shoplifting and assault dating back to the mid 1990s.

Lachance, who was named chief in July 2010, said there was no record of Wilson ever being disciplined by the department following any of his arrests and convictions. He said officials have not investigated why that was the case.
