ALLENSTOWN, N.H. — At a special Allenstown Fire Department meeting last night, members voted in support of rule changes to make sure all on-call firefighters are responding to emergencies, the fire chief said.
The closed-door meeting was called after firefighters raised concerns with the way fire Chief Dan Hart was portrayed as presenting the changes at a selectmen’s meeting Monday night, Hart said.
Hart told the selectmen that of the 30 on-call firefighters, about 10 to 12 were “doing all the work.”
The department’s standing orders would be changed to require active members to sign up for at least four on-call shifts per month and meet minimum training requirements.
Hart has since stressed that the rule changes were suggested by the on-call members who were “burned out” from carrying most of the call load, and the changes were discussed at regular department meetings.
Last night, Hart said the two-hour meeting resulted in a vote being taken on whether to move forward with the rule changes. Of the 16 members present, 14 voted in support of the changes, and two voted against, he said.
