NEW YORK — Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano today announced the appointment of José Maldonado as the first ever FDNY Associate Commissioner for Compliance. In this role, he will oversee the FDNY’s ongoing and extensive efforts to strengthen and enhance its recruitment, diversity and equal employment opportunity (EEO) programs.
“José Maldonado has had an extensive and distinguished career in public service — from law enforcement to consumer advocacy - and has helped improve the lives of countless New Yorkers,” said Commissioner Cassano. “In this newly created position, he will again serve the city by helping the FDNY in our continuing effort to achieve a more diverse workforce.”
“I’m thrilled to join the premier Fire Department in the world,” said Associate Commissioner Maldonado. “The FDNY has already demonstrated a strong commitment to diversity through its extensive recruitment efforts, and I’m looking forward to helping the Department further achieve its goals.”
Maldonado, 57, a graduate of the New York University School of Law where he now serves as a life trustee, has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors. His public service includes work as an assistant district attorney for New York County; deputy attorney general in the State Attorney General’s Office; assistant commissioner at the NYC Police Department; and he was appointed commissioner at two city agencies under former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani: Juvenile Justice and Consumer Affairs. He was named the first ever chairman of the New York City Business Integrity Commission by Mayor Bloomberg in 2002, where he was responsible for regulating the private waste hauling industry and businesses operating in the city’s public wholesale markets.
For the last two years, Maldonado has been the Co-Chair of the Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice Group at Pitta & Giblin LLP, where he has represented clients in legislative, administrative and government relations matters. Prior to that position, he was a vice president at UnitedHealth Group where he ensured the New York health plan’s compliance with federal, state and city regulatory and contractual requirements.
Maldonado, a life-long New York City resident, grew up in Manhattan and currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife and son.
