Ohio fire chief resigns after ‘information hack’

The Asst. Fire Chief allegedly accessed confidential information and fed it to the former fire chief

FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — An Ohio assistant fire chief resigned Wednesday after he allegedly shared confidential documents with the town’s former fire chief.

An investigation revealed that Assistant Chief Benjamin Bultman “hacked into computers at the administration building and the clerk’s office” and took confidential information and shared it, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Some of the information Bultman took concerned a local resident’s litigation. He reportedly gave that information to David Downie, the town’s former fire chief, and Kevin Potter, a former candidate for the Fairfield Township trustee.

Trustees fired Downie in May for altercations with township officials and failure to discipline an employee.

The investigation was sparked by security issues township officials started to notice in June. The FBI and sheriff’s office were called in to assist.

An information technology company ran a report on the township’s records, which indicated Bultman’s involvement.

Bultman submitted a letter of resignation admitting what he did wrong and apologized, the article said.

“I apologize for any problems that I may have caused due to my unauthorized access into confidential information,” he wrote.

Bultman had been with the Fairfield Township Fire Department since 1996 and was in the running for chief.
