Volunteer fire dept. may lose cheap fuel for unpaid bill

The regional authority says it is tired of the unpaid bill and will cut off discounted fuel for department vehicles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Officials for the Kanawha Valley Regional Transportation Authority may dump the Chesapeake Volunteer Fire Department from the county fuel program if firefighters don’t start paying their bill on time.

KRT operates three fueling stations in the county to fuel its buses. But about 50 government agencies in the county also buy fuel through KRT, which buys diesel fuel and gasoline in bulk for less than fuel costs at commercial gas stations. Agencies that buy discount fuel from KRT include State Police, the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, the county ambulance authority and most of the county’s volunteer fire departments.

But KRT General Manager Denny Dawson said transit officials have been in a constant battle with officials for the Chesapeake fire department to pay the department’s fuel bill.
