Volunteer firefighters return to posts after chief’s suspension

City officials will examine whether asking the firefighters to perform flagging duties was appropriate

WINLAW, British Columbia — Volunteer firefighters are back on the job after their fire chief was suspended for insubordination last week.

News1130 reported that 19 firefighters left their posts last week when their fire chief was suspended. However, the suspension was revoked at a meeting Thursday night.

The controversy erupted after the regional district asked the firefighters to provide traffic control for a community meeting in July. Winlaw Fire Chief Jon Wollenberg said traffic control wasn’t an emergency and his crews wanted to attend the meeting as citizens, according to the report.

City officials will examine whether asking the firefighters to perform flagging duties was appropriate, but also say a personality clash may have played a part in the dispute, according to the report.
