MADISON, Wis. — A local landscaping firm is taking lawn trimming to new heights on Wednesday, all the way up to the roof.
Madison Fire Department’s Fire Station No. 12 on Madison’s far west side will get a roof trimming, with crews from Messner Landscape Maintenance cutting back the sedum covering the newest fire station’s top.
“The station has a green vegetation roof instead of conventional roofing materials,” said spokesperson Lori Wirth.
The fire station, at 400 South Point Road, opened last August. It has so many energy saving features that the building’s design earned a platinum rating in Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED).
Wirth said the sedum only needs to be cut back once a year.
“Some people suggested we just get a sheep, but the roof isn’t like the nice, grassy slope on Al Johnson’s restaurant in Door County,” Wirth said.
The famous Swedish restaurant in Sister Bay has goats grazing on the sod covering the roof.
