BOSTON — Two firefighters were hospitalized and a South End apartment evacuated because of toxic fumes from a can of insecticide, officials said.

The two jakes were investigating a “strange odor” at a second-floor apartment at 112 Chandler St. when they were stricken, said Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald.

They complained of throat irritation, were given oxygen, and taken to Brigham & Women’s Hospital, MacDonald said.

Two tenants also were treated. Their condition was not immediately known.
