SELMER, Tenn. — A fire outside a Selmer high school welding shop has injured three students, one of them seriously.

Selmer Fire Chief Anthony Carr told The Jackson Sun that the fire occurred on Wednesday after one of the boys accidentally knocked over a container of gasoline and paint thinner while they were burning lead pencils at McNairy Central High School.

One boy was splashed with the mixture and suffered burns on his chest and arms. His lungs were also damaged from the fumes.

He had to be airlifted to a Memphis hospital where he was listed in serious condition. The two other boys were taken to the McNairy-Regional Hospital in Selmer. Their conditions were not immediately known.
