EDEN, N.Y. — A volunteer firefighter remains in critical condition after being crushed Tuesday by an estimated 1-ton of falling roof ice.

Tony Leonard, 59, was getting into a car to go to breakfast with his wife Tuesday when warm temperatures caused a large slab of ice to slide off Leonard’s duplex on South Main Street, Eden. The falling ice pinned Leonard to the ground and it took several people to move heavy ice chunks so Leonard could be transported for treatment.

“There was at least a ton of ice. It took three individuals to get the main chunk of ice off him,” said North Evans Fire District Chief Nick Mecca.
