LOS ANGELES — A firefighter-paramedic was honored for his compassionate care of a special needs patient.

Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter-paramedic Jack Albert responded to a reported fall in March and found that an 18-year-old special needs victim had been robbed of his bicycle, assaulted and thrown onto light rail tracks at a Los Angeles Metro Rail station, according to LAFD.org.

Deeply concerned by the incident, Albert transported the teen to the hospital and then drove to a bike shop to replace the patient’s bicycle. He then drove back to the hospital and presented it to him.

Albert did not mention what he did to his colleagues when he returned, and they only found out when the patient’s mother came to the station and told the responders that her son was deeply touched by the act of kindness.

Albert was honored for his actions and display of exceptional character by the department at a fire commissioners’ board meeting.
