BROWNSVILLE, Texas — A 14-year fire service veteran died Sunday night at a fire station.

The Brownsville Herald reported that firefighter Alejandro Castro, 40, died of undisclosed causes at Brownsville Fire Station No. 8.

An autopsy is underway to find out what caused firefighter Castro to collapse.

“We’re just waiting on that report to come in and see what the official causes of his death were. He did die here at the station,” Chief Lenny Perez said. “He was one of those individuals who helped us in our EMS fire merger. He was able to make the transition to help us train more firefighters. He will be sorely missed.”

A public viewing is set for Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Brownsville. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday.

Firefighter Castro leaves behind a wife and two children.
