TRENTON, N.J. — A N.J. fire department and EMS agency have partnered with a university to facilitate a ride-along program that helps train nursing students.
Trenton Fire Department, Trenton EMS and Thomas Edison State University (TESU) collaborated to launch the program that gives students an insight into the prehospital work of first responders, and observe how decisions are made in emergency situations, according to WPVI.
“(The program is) a good thing for the fire department because what it does is it helps our members learn from them while they learn from us,” said Trenton Fire Director Derrick Sawyer. “And then it impacts the community because now it provides the community with a higher level of care.”
The ride-alongs began earlier this year, and TESU accelerated nursing students say the experience has been valuable.
“It helps us get an idea not only of what our other partners in health care do for the community, but also the types of settings that our patients come from,” said student Anagha Sreenivsan. “Being on the ride-alongs has let us see the conditions they face.”
