CHARLESTON, S.C. — Despite the rescue efforts of firefighters and paramedics, a shooting victim died at a West Ashley fire station Tuesday.
According to reports, about 4:50 p.m., a man drove the victim to the St. Andrews Fire Department station near the intersection of St. Andrews and Sam Rittenberg boulevards.
Details were sketchy. The victim’s age and name were not released. Charleston police spokesman Charles Francis said only that the victim was male.
The shooting took place at 1339 St. Clair Drive, Francis said. The brick, ranch-style house is in the West Oak Forest subdivision.
Crime scene tape was stretched across St. Clair Drive between Wantoot Boulevard and Whitmarsh Drive, blocking off several surrounding homes.
A woman who lives on St. Clair Drive had to park a block and a half away from her home and walk to her door. She said she had just come home from work and was unaware there had been a shooting.
Detectives and uniformed officers were questioning young men in the neighborhood, putting handcuffs on some before questioning them. Several were taken to police headquarters for interviews.
Patrol officers knocked on the doors of neighbors and asked if anyone heard or saw anything.
The victim’s identity was being withheld until his relatives could be notified, the coroner’s office said. The case is the Charleston Police Department’s first homicide so far this year.
Anyone with information about the shooting should call Charleston police at 577-7434 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
