BELLEVUE, Wash. — A 22-year veteran died Wednesday following a scuba diving accident last weekend.

King5 reported that Deanna Carr, with the Bellevue Fire Department, was participating in a dive certification class when she notified instructors underwater there was a problem and she was going to the surface.

She was helped to the beach, where she was alert and talking but later lost consciousness and stopped breathing.

Family and friends offered condolences on the Bellevue Fire Department Facebook page.

“She contributed greatly to an open, humorous and hard working environment, was not afraid to speak her mind and held everyone she worked with to high standards. She was an outstanding firefighter/EMT who loved her career and had the admiration and respect of her coworkers,” said Mark Risen, Interim Fire Chief with Bellevue Fire.

A memorial was held Saturday.
