FENNIMORE, Wis. — Fifty-six fire and emergency medical service departments in southwest Wisconsin have been awarded a federal grant providing more than $82,000 toward training firefighters and emergency medical personnel in the next year.

Grant County Emergency Management and the Fennimore Fire Department partnered to apply for the grant on behalf of the units within Southwest Wisconsin Technical College’s five-county district.

The funding will cover the cost of courses within a wide range of topics, including firefighter safety and survival, wildland firefighting and incident command. Advanced-level classes such as fire officer and fire instructor also are included in the grant.

The grant also will support regionally standardized training for rapidintervention teams, a group of firefighters dedicated solely for search and rescue of other firefighters in distress. Fire service standards call for a standby team to be on-site anytime firefighters are working in dangerous conditions.
