Cross Roads, Ky. — The small community of Cross Roads held a barbecue benefit fundraiser Saturday night, and, despite cold weather and misting rain, the turnout was good. Why venture out on a day like that? Community support for the Cross Roads Volunteer Fire Department.

“I have been the fire chief for Cross Roads Volunteer Fire Department since the mid-1990s,” Bill Byers said at the event. “We have five fire trucks, including a pumper truck, a pumper/tanker, a tanker, a brush truck, and a rescue truck. We were the first volunteer fire department in the county to have the Jaws of Life. The Jaws of Life is extricating equipment where, if a victim is trapped in a vehicle, we can get him or her out.

“The calls vary from season to season,” he said. “In the summer and when it’s really dry, we have more calls because of grass fires.”
