WATERFORD, Mich. — The Waterford Regional fire department will be laying off 39 firefighters, hired through a government grant, on Oct. 15 –– and may close its Williams Lake Road fire station.

The 39 were hired in April 2013 under a Staffing for Adequate Firefighters and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program funded by the Department of Homeland Security. The township received $7.6 million grant over two years. Fire Chief John Lyman said the department had applied for an extension but had not heard about an approval. He said he was not happy about the layoffs or the possibility of a station closing.

“We will work to provide the best service we can,” he said Monday. Fire Station 4, located at 6615 Williams Lake Road generally was manned by two people, Lyman said.
